Cutting Both Ways (Blunt and Sharp)  by jaune_chat , M (no romantic relationship). Jane asks Bucky to help her in the kitchen. And is unconcerned about being alone with an armed ex-assassin. The realization hits Bucky like a knife to the chest.

Consent of the Damned  by hitlikehammers , T (no romantic relationship). Bucky Barnes and Rocket Raccoon: well I didn't ask to get made! I didn't ask to be torn apart and put back together over and over and turned into some, some little monster!  This fic was written well before Infinity War but correctly managed to predict a good deal of what would happen generally and even some of the character beats between Bucky and Rocket.

She said it calmly, so Bucky didn’t immediately go flying out of the apartment to tear apart the Tower in search of Steve. Then again, Natasha would probably be calm if New York City spontaneously burst into flames. He lowered the coffee pot and squinted at her. “Of course he has,” he said. He felt, abruptly, exhausted. “What is it?” “The witch kept ranting about sexual repression and archaic moral principles,” she continued blithely.

If we can’t track down and subdue a frith—um, small Asgardian mammal, then nobody can,” Steve says. He tries to look reassuring. It must not be working. She’s still looking around like it might pop out at any moment.

Unusual Weather  by novembersmith , E (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes). Bucky’s been at the Avengers Tower for three weeks before he finally gives in to Steve’s gentle coaxing and Stark’s cheerful waving of fistfuls of circuits, and lets them scan the arm. It doesn’t go well.

Theme 4: These Ones Are Serious

Wait, does raiding Hydra bunkers count as a date? Two underdeveloped canon characters get some real development and a chance to shine.

Steve is nineteen and skinny and asthmatic and he's just been rejected by some girl whose name Bucky doesn't even remember. Bucky, as Steve's best friend, has the semi-official duty of reassuring Steve that She Doesn't Deserve Him and She Has a Mean Older Brother and She's Ugly Anyway.

Phil Coulson is Not the Avengers’ Public Relations Manager by scifigrl47, T (Steve Rogers/Tony Stark, Phil Coulson/Clint Barton). From the Avengers Case Files of Phil Coulson: Grocery shopping is necessary, Tony’s a little too proud of his tech, Captain America’s lost on the streets of New York, and sometimes social injustice just happens. This was the first work of any sort I consumed in MCU fandom. Like, I read it before I watched any of the movies.
