Theme 2: Wibbly Wobbly, Timey Wimey

From Winter’s Cold  by 27dragons , E (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes/Tony Stark). Tony gets sent back in time, where he rescues Bucky from his fate - but in the process, he changes the timeline, and it turns out there really did need to be a Winter Soldier to shape the 20th century.

The Kinder Thing by stele3 , M (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes). Steve originally knows Bucky only as the Winter Soldier, but then there’s a timey-wimey bubble and Steve ends up back in the 30s, where he meets the original Bucky.

Theme 3: Rule 63

Trending  by osidiano , T (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes, rule 63). Bucky casually texts Steve that she's pregnant. While Steve's in a meeting. With the director. And a couple of senators. Maybe some reporters. Needless to say, Steve embarrasses himself.

Press  by mardia , T (Steve Rogers/Sam Wilson, rule 63). “So thanks to this interview, everyone thinks we’re dating,” Sam says, her voice flat.

Candy Crush by Ihateallergies, G (Bucky Barnes/Sam Wilson, rule 63). All Sam wants is some chocolate. Nobody asked Bucky Barnes to show up, at least not like this.

SSR Team 161 “The Amazons” by valmora , T (Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, rule 63). Abraham Erskine didn't particularly seem put out that his serum was only going to work on women, which was nice of him.

Theme 4: Werewolves

And the Autumn Moon is Bright  by SleepsWithCoyotes, M (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes). Steve and Bucky try to hide the changes they’ve undergone from each other. Meanwhile, all the Howling Commandoes are convinced Steve and Bucky are sleeping together.

Werewolf? There Wolf (series)  by leveragehunters , G and T (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes). After the car accident that cost him his arm and the endless rehabilitation that got him his shiny metal Stark Industries replacement, Bucky's happy for a break from people. The house in the forest is peaceful, town's a fair distance away, and he's got no neighbours...except maybe a blue-eyed wolf and possibly a naked guy named Steve.

Theme 5: Cats?

A Clowder of Cats  by lauralot , G (no romantic pairing). Steve agrees to catsit for Isaac Murphy. He doesn’t ask as many questions about the cats’ names as maybe he should have.

Liho’s Human  by silverfoxflower , T (no romantic relationship). Liho decides to adopt a human. It takes three months to train her.

Theme 1: Bucky in Bucharest

Get Scrooged  by albymangroves, leveraghunters, T (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes). There’s a terrible bureaucratic snafu, and Bucky Barnes is scheduled to be visited in Bucharest by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet To Come.

Theme 2: Modern-Day Fluff

Cafe Au Ecoute  by littlesystems, T (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes, shrunkyclunks). No matter where Steve goes, there's always the chance that he'll overhear a conversation about himself - or rather, Captain America. This coffee shop is no different. The fact that he keeps eavesdropping well past the point of plausible deniability is another matter entirely.

The Winter Soldier vs. Twitter (hashtag BuckRogers)  by galwednesday , M (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes). Steve and Bucky announce their relationship in a very dignified press conference. Bucky then replies to every goddamn tweet asking him to confirm it with a different dirty euphemism. Things escalate from there.

Let’s Fall in Love  by Desdemon, T (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes). Bucky attempts to demonstrate to Steve the moves he used to put on girls back in the day.

Theme 3: Winter Soldier Kidfic

All The Leaves Are Brown (And the sky is gray)  by AvocadoLove, T (no romantic pairing). Winter Soldier kidfic, the Bucky & Tony version.

Theme 4: Pre-War Fluff

if the bad times are coming let ‘em come  by suzukiblu, E (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes, shrinkyclinks). So listen, this is a little more explicit than I normally rec but I just really love this fic. I think the tags say it best: Steve Rogers is not a virgin; but the Winter Soldier kind of is.

Take Your Time Coming Home  by odetteandodile , M (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes). Steve pines for Bucky without even knowing he's pining for Bucky thanks to a series of letters and an unusual roommate arrangement in 1930's Brooklyn.

Theme 5: Modern-Day Non-Fluff

I’ll Be A Thorn In Your Side  by th_esaurus , M (Steve Rogers/Brock Rumlow). Steve and Brock are fuck buddies, prior to the events of CATWS.

The Age of Accountability  by lauralot , G (no romantic relationship). Steve and Natasha track down the traitorous STRIKE team members, but they’ve turned into children. Interesting examination of the nature vs. nurture debate.

For the week of December 14, 2018.  Old and new fics, multi ships.  I didn't cross-post to tumblr cause it's a pain in the neck.

The Right Thing in the Wrong Way  by igrockspock, T (Tony Stark/Pepper Potts). People don’t ask why Pepper sticks by Tony as often as they should, and if they did, she probably wouldn’t tell them the truth: that he’s never left her alone on the one day she actually needs him.

A Plethora of Peppers  by outtabreath, T (Tony Stark/Pepper Potts, mentions of Pepper Potts/Happy Hogan, Pepper Potts/Natasha Romanoff, and Pepper Potts/OMCs). Tony tries to invent a Star Trek-style transporter; instead he winds up with multiple alternate universe versions of Pepper. None of the Peppers is particularly impressed.

Feed The Body, Nourish The Soul  by copperbadge, T (no relationship). So listen, imagine if all your favourite Avengers were avant-garde chefs and hipster food truck operators instead, and then Loki wanted to come into their neighbourhood and open a mid-market chain restaurant. If you liked that, this is just the first in the Foodieverse series  by copperbadge and scifigrl47, mostly T (mostly gen or Steve Rogers/Tony Stark), all of which I highly recommend.

Mental Mimosas by Catchclaw. This is an extensive collection and not all MCU. Here are my top picks:

• The Gift of the Geamhradh  T (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes). It was, without question, the part of being king he resented the most, for summer was the season in which each section of the kingdom sent to him their best and most beautiful, those whom each community had carefully chosen to be their representative in what was still seen as the most sacred and powerful of spaces: the royal harem.
• A Date With A Haint  T (Steve Rogers/Tony Stark). “Let me get this straight,” Mr. Stark said. “You have a ghost?” “No, I don’t have a ghost,” Peter said, affronted. “It doesn’t belong to me. That’s absurd.”
• Winter Come Early  T (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes). Captain Rogers and Lieutenant Barnes build a new life after the American Civil War.
• Afterthought  T (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes). Because I literally cannot get enough of post-American Civil War AUs.
• I Hate This, But I Love This, Too  T (Steve Rogers/Tony Stark). I’m sure we’re going to die any minute, so let me finally confess that I’ve had a crush on you for years.

Seahorses  by poppyfields13 and tinzelda, E (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes). Bucky takes over as Captain America, Steve decides to adopt a baby. But will Steve and Bucky figure out their feelings for each other?! (Spoiler: of course they will)

Doing You Right in Shawsville  by james, T (Clint Barton/Phil Coulson). We had to pretend to be married for an op and, oops, I realized I have real feelings for you.

we are thunder wrapped in cellophane  by cacchieressa, G (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes). This year, he’s got Bucky back, which means that no matter what they do, it’s going to be the best birthday Steve’s ever had.

Theme 1: Spoop and Horror because OFC it’s still Hallowe’en

dreamed your dream, written your name by Janonny, author didn’t provide a rating but I’d call it M for spookiness (Steve Rogers/Tony Stark). A perfect balance of spooky/squicky and sad, and Steve and Tony actually - gasp - /talk/ to each other about their feelings arising out of Wanda’s visions in Age of Ultron.

From the pain I have been frozen into (I beg to be free) by cap-sweet-and-salty-sadness, E (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes). On the run from Hydra, James gets in a car accident during a snowstorm. He’s saved by a gentle and caring man who lives in a cabin in the middle of the woods. Why does he instantly trusts him, and why does he keep dreaming of a door in the basement that isn’t there? Excellent level of spookiness.

Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me by SoftObsidian74, T (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes). Bucky finally comes back from war. But he’s not alone. Steve doesn’t care; he made a promise and he plans to see it through, day or night. More excellently spooky stuff.

Theme 2: Fluff to Help Pretend it’s not the Middle of Winter

Bucky Barnes: Sunscreen Assassin by newsbypostcard, M (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes). Of course Steve won’t wear sunscreen. Like usual, it’s up to Bucky to protect Steve from the consequences of his own bad decisions.

Captain America and the Accidental Baby Acquisition by stevergrsno, G (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes). More fluff to brighten your winter. Does exactly what it says on the tin.

That Takes the Cake by mambo, author didn’t provide a rating but I’d call it G (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes). Wrong-number, meet-ugly, shrunkyclunks. “We have fifty boxes of cake mix and you needed to be here three hours ago.”

A Bird, A Spy, and a Supersoldier Walk Into a Bar by flightyrock, G. Sam and Natasha make Steve go to karaoke.

Cheater Cheater Pumpkin Eater by odette-and-odile, T (Cap!Steve Rogers/modern!Bucky Barnes). Bucky’s first impression of the tall, hot blonde guy is that he’s the only other person at Clint’s Halloween party who looks as awkward as Bucky feels.

His second impression is that the guy is about to cheat at a dumb game to avoid watching a scary movie.

As for third impressions and beyond? Well, things start looking up from there…

Ever a Surprise by Atsadi, G (Steve Rogers/Tony Stark). College AU. Tony needs a date to Jan’s Hallowe’en party. Good thing his new apartment came complete with a monster under the bed.

The Nature of Dust  by inkvoices, M (Clint Barton/Natasha Romanoff). This is not normally a main pairing I’d read for its own sake, but I was really drawn to the premise - Dustbowl AU, travelling circus, dark/supernatural elements.

This Bitter Earth  by CloudAtlas, T (Clint Barton/Natasha Romanoff). The previous fic (The Nature of Dust) led me directly to this one. Clint and Natasha at the end of the world, climate change dystopia.

too many fish in the sea by mmtion, T (Steve Rogers/Tony Stark). There’s a negative space wedgie, and then Steve has his hands full with multiple alternate Tonys, including Cowboy Tony, Super Villain Tony, Drag Queen Tony, and, of course, heavily pregnant and foul-mouthed Tony.

Form 42-D/85 - Form 42-D/86 by raiining, M (Phil Coulson/Clint Barton). Marriages entered into for the purpose of active operations will be respected by S.H.I.E.L.D. and all other national and international government agencies until such time as Form 42-D/86 is filed at the completion of said operations. So what if Clint never bothered to file form 42-D/86, and never got around to asking Phil if he had filed it?

Robot Trip by copperbadge, T (Tony Stark/Pepper Potts, Tony Stark & Steve Rogers). Tony is driving from Malibu to Manhattan with a robot in the back seat and Captain America riding escort at Pepper's behest. What could possibly go wrong?

To a few, it'll be grief; To the law, a relief; But it's death for Bonnie and Clyde by haipollai, not rated but I’d call it T (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes; Clint Barton/Bobbi Morse). The best post-CACW fic written pre-CACW that I have yet to read.

The Naked Gun by sirona, M (Clint Barton/Phil Coulson). Phil thinks with possibly a bit too much smugness that they certainly hadn’t expected to encounter a denuded guy holding a gun and shooting straight. “Villains these days,” he mutters disappointedly.

Men do not live only by fighting evils by acaramelmacchiato, G (no pairing). Sharon Carter’s first year with SHIELD involves a lot of laundry and lying. Plus various darkly comedic adventures of the Winter Soldier in Soviet Russia: And we shall joyfully tell one another everything that has happened, T (no pairing); But some of us are looking at the stars, M (Winter Soldier/Yuri Gagarin); Time is what keeps the light from reaching us, T (Winter Soldier/Steve Rogers; Steve Rogers/Peggy Carter); and Repetition of Position, G (Winter Soldier & Natasha Romanoff).

The Last Two in a Long, Long Line  by visiblemarket, T (Clint Barton/Phil Coulson). "I thought we'd be done with all this." Clint can practically hear the way his eyes are crinkling, that slight, sweet smirk of his. It's distracting even when Clint can't see it. "Huh?" "Patching you up in the middle of the night. Now that I'm not your handler anymore."

almost heaven  by mcwho, T (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes). The house is covered in Halloween decorations, top to bottom. Bucky is what some might call a festivity whore. By ‘some’, he mainly means Sam. Bucky prefers to think of himself as enthusiastic. If there’s an occasion coming up, and stores are selling decorations to commemorate it, well, a thorough celebration is only respectful.
